What it is
The north-east corner of São Paulo, up against the Minas border, at 900 to 1,100 m on deep terra roxa — the red volcanic soil that made the state rich.
What it's known for
Age and body. More than 150 years of continuous coffee, and a cup built on creamy body, chocolate and caramel with a gentle acidity. Bourbon country.
The character of the place
Named after the Companhia Mogiana railway, laid to carry coffee down to Santos. Some of the fazendas around Franca and Altinópolis are among the oldest working coffee estates in Brazil, still in the same families, still in the same colonial farmhouses.
